How AI-powered search is changing what marketers need to track
Something has been happening to website traffic over the past eighteen months that a lot of marketing teams have not accounted for yet. Visitors are arriving directly, without a referral source that Google Analytics can identify, and the volume of this dark traffic has been rising steadily. A meaningful portion of it is coming from AI-powered search tools — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot — and none of these platforms pass referral data in the standard way that search engines and social platforms do.
The result is that a growing share of your inbound traffic looks like direct in your reports. If you are making channel decisions based on that data, you are working from an incomplete picture.
Why AI search does not show in your analytics
When someone clicks a link from Google, the referral source is passed to your analytics platform via HTTP headers. Google is identified. The session is attributed. When someone uses ChatGPT to research a topic and the model surfaces your URL, the user typically copies it into their browser or opens it in a new window. The referral chain is broken. The visit appears as direct traffic.
Perplexity has begun passing referral data more consistently, and Google’s AI Overviews use a slightly different mechanism, but the core problem remains: AI-generated traffic is underreported in almost every analytics setup we have reviewed.
What to do about it
Audit your direct traffic
Look at your direct traffic trend over the last 18 months. If it has grown substantially while your SEO traffic has remained flat or declined, there is a reasonable chance that some of that growth is AI-referred. Look at which pages are receiving this direct traffic — if they are informational or research-oriented pages rather than your homepage, that is a further indicator.
UTM parameters on all shareable content
Any content you publish that is likely to be cited — guides, data pieces, thought leadership articles — should be structured so that when your URL is shared, it carries UTM parameters. This will not capture every AI referral, but it will capture more of them than a clean URL will.
Track brand search volume separately
AI tools increase brand awareness for businesses whose content they surface regularly. This shows up as an increase in branded search queries over time. Track your brand search volume in Google Search Console as a leading indicator of AI-driven awareness, even when direct conversion tracking is difficult.
Check if you are being cited
Tools like Perplexity allow you to search for your own domain name and see if your content is being surfaced as a source. Do this regularly. If your content is being cited, the volume of invisible traffic you are receiving is probably higher than you think. If it is not, that is a content quality and authority signal worth acting on.
The content implication
AI search tools surface content that answers questions clearly, completely, and authoritatively. This is good news for businesses that have invested in genuine depth over keyword stuffing. If your content strategy has been built around volume rather than quality, this shift in how search works is worth paying attention to.
What this means for your SEO strategy
The fundamentals of SEO have not changed — clear structure, authoritative content, fast pages, quality links. What has changed is the endpoint. Content that was previously optimised purely for a ten blue links results page now also needs to be structured in a way that makes it easy for a language model to understand, cite, and recommend.
This means clearer headings, concise summaries at the top of long-form content, structured data where relevant, and content that answers the question a prospect actually has rather than content that targets a keyword adjacent to it.
At A.A. Dynamics, we have been incorporating AI search visibility into our SEO work for clients since mid-2024. If your analytics show rising direct traffic that you cannot explain, it is worth having a proper look at where it is coming from. We offer a free audit for new enquiries that includes a direct traffic analysis.
