Pretoria law firm

How a Pretoria law firm kept its clients and its rankings through a full website rebuild

Zero ranking loss across 47 tracked search terms in the 90 days following the new site launch.

34% drop in page load time — from 6.8 seconds to 4.5 seconds on mobile, measured at go-live.

No client-facing downtime during the migration window, with the old site running in parallel until every redirect was confirmed live.

The problem

The firm’s website was seven years old. It loaded slowly on mobile, the content management system had not been updated in two years, and the contact forms were failing intermittently. A rebuild was overdue. The problem was that the old site had accumulated real search visibility over that time. Several practice area pages ranked on page one for Pretoria-specific legal terms, and those pages were bringing in enquiries. The firm had seen what happened to competitors who rebuilt without thinking about what they were leaving behind.

The myth we busted

The myth: A new website means starting your SEO from scratch. Most firms either delay rebuilds to protect rankings or go ahead and accept the traffic drop as the cost of a better site.

What we did instead: We treated the migration as a technical handover, not a reset. Every URL on the old site was mapped before a single page on the new site was built, and no page went live without a confirmed 301 redirect in place. The SEO groundwork came first. The design followed.

The playbook

  • Full URL audit before build: We crawled the existing site and documented every indexed URL, its ranking position, and its monthly traffic. Pages with established rankings were flagged for priority redirect mapping. Nothing was left to assumption.
  • Redirect-first development: The redirect file was written and tested in a staging environment before the new site launched. On go-live day, we verified each redirect manually against the top 50 ranking URLs. The firm’s clients looking for the employment law or property law pages landed exactly where they expected to.
  • Structured maintenance retainer: After launch, we set up monthly technical checks covering core web vitals, broken link scanning, plugin updates and form testing. The contact form failures that had been losing the firm enquiries were caught within the first scheduled check and fixed the same week.

The moment it clicked

Four weeks after launch, Google Search Console showed all 47 tracked terms still indexing at the same positions or better. The page one rankings for the firm’s main practice areas had transferred cleanly. That told us the redirect structure had worked exactly as intended.

What the client said

They had been putting the rebuild off for over a year because they were worried about losing the enquiries the old site was generating. When the rankings held and the phones did not go quiet, they said they wished they had done it sooner.

The payoff

The firm got a faster, maintainable site without paying for it with a traffic setback. The migration worked because the SEO was treated as infrastructure, not an afterthought.

Search engines follow redirects. They remember what a domain has earned. The work is in making sure nothing breaks the handover. Once that is done correctly, a rebuild does not cost you rankings. It just costs time spent planning before anything goes live.
